Vision loss due to GLP-1 RAs

Vision loss comes in many forms, one of them being non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This happens when you get optic nerve damage due to a lack of blood flow. NAION is mainly associated as a risk factor for diabetes, hypertension, and even sleep apnea.

New findings suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) like Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, and others can also result in this form of vision loss. If you’re unfamiliar with GLP-1 RAs, they’re a growing line of type 2 diabetes and weight management medications that have grown more popular in the last couple of years. But how do these medications result in NAION, whereas they mostly regulate insulin and slow down gastric emptying?

One of the probable reasons is that GLP-1 RAs lower blood pressure. In some cases, this can lower the blood flow to a person’s optic nerve, thus resulting in vision loss. On a related note, GLP-1 RAs can also cause nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. These side effects lead to reduced blood volume, which can affect the blood that flows to the optic nerve. If you’ve been taking any of these medications, then you need to look for these symptoms:

  • Blurred or dim vision
  • Painless vision loss after sleeping
  • Lack of eye pain despite impaired vision
  • Reduced color perception

It’s worth noting that NAION can’t be reversed. So, it’s highly recommended that you get your eyes checked if you experience any of the symptoms above after GLP-1 RA treatment.

GLP-1 RA manufacturers like Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have recently been under flak because they’ve been unable to highlight the serious risks involved when using such medications. Other than vision loss, GLP-1 RAs also result in gastroparesis and bowel obstruction. Victims are taking a stand by taking them to court, and we encourage you to do the same if you believe you’re a victim.

Atraxia Law can help you check your claim’s eligibility

You can start by compiling all of your medical records that show you’ve undergone GLP-1 RA treatment and that you’ve been diagnosed with NAION, gastroparesis, or bowel obstruction. From there, our team will check your case and see if you’re a potential claimant. If you are eligible, we’ll bring your case to a specialized attorney to get the legal process started.
