4 signs and symptoms of a defective hernia mesh

Due to the material they are made of, how they were placed, or how long they have been in the body, hernia meshes can lead to many health complications, including migration and bowel obstruction.

So, what are the risks of hernia mesh failure?

Most failed hernia mesh symptoms may not seem bothersome, so it's crucial to understand the risks.

If you experience any of the symptoms detailed below, which are rejection, migration, hernia recurrence, and bowel obstruction, we strongly advise you to undergo a medical examination as soon as possible to find out how you can get help.

1. Rejection

When the body rejects a hernia mesh, the immune system begins fighting against the device, perceiving it as a foreign object, by causing the following symptoms:

  • abdominal pain
  • cramps
  • bloating
  • nausea and vomiting
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • fever or chills
  • fatigue
  • flu-like symptoms
  • swelling, redness, or warmth around the space of implantation

2. Migration

While hernia mesh rejection can happen shortly after the device was placed, migration takes longer to occur as it begins to erode or shrink slowly. The signs associated with hernia mesh migration include:

  • pain (local or generalized)
  • blood in the urine
  • the formation of fistulas
  • fever, chills, or other flu-like symptoms
  • tenderness, redness, or swelling around the surgical scar

3. Hernia recurrence

The recurrence of hernia is another complication a defective mesh can result in. Some of the symptoms you may experience in this situation are:

  • infection
  • constipation
  • nausea and vomiting
  • loss of blood supply to the intestines
  • a lump at the site of the previous surgery

4. Bowel obstruction

It will block the small intestine if connective tissue forms, making it very difficult or even impossible to pass stool. In severe cases, perforation of the intestine may occur, especially if the bowel obstruction is ignored and not properly treated.

The hernia mesh could also pierce the small intestine, causing perforation. The symptoms of bowel obstruction are the following:

  • crampy abdominal pain which comes and goes
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting
  • swelling of the abdomen
  • constipation
  • inability to have a bowel movement or pass gas
