Ozempic and Mounjaro makers are in court for over 1500 lawsuits

At first glance, popular weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy seem like a dream breakthrough in modern medicine. This type of medication triggers insulin release, blood sugar level reduction, and weight loss.

Celebrities and influencers talking about the weight loss injections even made them more popular.

The weight loss dream started crashing as early as 2023 when the first Ozempic lawsuit was filed in court. As of March 2025, over 1500 lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly.

Why are GLP-1 makers in court?

The first GLP-1 lawsuit was filed in August 2023. A Louisiana woman sued GLP-1 makers after she suffered gastrointestinal (GI) issues from taking Ozempic and Mounjaro. The lawsuit was filed against the following companies:

  • Novo Nordisk manufactures semaglutide and liraglutide brands. The company is based in Denmark.
  • Eli Lilly is a US-based pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Indiana, which makes tirzepatide (dual agonist) and dulaglutide drugs.

With an increasing number of lawsuits that cover similar GI issues from taking GLP-1 RA medication, at least 55 lawsuits were consolidated into multidistrict litigation in GLP-1 product liability (MDL 3094) in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. There are now at least 1,521 pending cases under MDL 3094 as of March 2025. Unlike a class action lawsuit, where a plaintiff can file on behalf of all parties affected, MDL 3094 only consolidates all GLP-1 lawsuits about gastrointestinal injuries in a single district court, but each case must still be filed individually. You may be eligible to file a claim if you have suffered GI issues after taking semaglutide or other GLP-1 medication.

Eligibility for a GLP-1 product liability claim

One of the most widely reported side effects of Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs is stomach paralysis or gastroparesis. Gastroparesis is a condition where stomach emptying slows down to a point where food cannot be digested normally or passed through the digestive tract. Some patients may even experience vomiting and abdominal pain.

In 2023, the increasing reports on delayed stomach emptying prompted the American Society of Anesthesiologists Task Force on Preoperative Fasting to adjust their pre-operation procedures to prevent complications for patients taking GLP-1 medication. Patients on daily dosing were asked to hold the dose on the day of their procedure, while patients on weekly dosing were asked to hold their GLP-1 dose a week before their procedure.

MDL 3094 focuses on alleged gastrointestinal side effects that the companies failed to warn the public about, including gastroparesis, intestinal obstruction and other gastrointestinal injuries. Other GI issues include the following:

  • gallbladder cancer
  • necrotizing pancreatitis
  • pancreatic cancer

Atraxia Law can evaluate your weight loss injection claim eligibility. You only need documents that prove you did not have these diseases as pre-existing conditions before taking any of the following GLP-1 drugs:

Other medical conditions linked to GLP-1 medication

New types of injuries are unlikely to be added to MDL 3094 after the panel denied a motion to add deep vein thrombosis (DVT) injuries, specifically DVT, venous thromboembolism, and pulmonary embolism, on December 12, 2024. The panel mentioned that the key factor for DVT injuries was the rapid loss of weight due to GLP-1 treatment, which differs from GI injuries. DVT injury lawsuits must be filed separately.

The following conditions had also been linked to GLP1 drugs, but lawsuits must be filed separately from MDL 3094.

If you have been diagnosed with a medical condition outside the scope of the MDL, Ataxia Law can still help you file a claim.
