Tepezza (teprotumumab) was introduced on the market following its FDA approval in January 2020 as an innovative drug to treat thyroid eye disease (TED).
Before Tepezza was launched, there was no approved drug for the treatment of this rare, progressive autoimmune disorder. The FDA approval was preceded by clinical trials, as a result of which the drug’s manufacturer, Horizon Pharmaceutics, issued warnings regarding the adverse effects of the drug. For otologic symptoms, the manufacturer warned about a risk of occurrence in about 10% of the patients.
However, a small study presented in early 2021 at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society revealed that the risk of otologic symptoms following Tepezza infusion treatment is alarmingly higher, occurring in even 65% of the Tepezza users. Moreover, the initial warning stated that hearing loss that occurs during treatment is reversible and will improve or disappear after the Tepezza infusion treatment is stopped. The aforementioned study showed that not all otologic symptoms are reversible and that some hearing loss issues persist several months after the conclusion of Tepezza infusion treatment and may also become permanent.
The two main otologic symptoms that you can seek compensation for in a Tepezza claim are:
Tepezza is administered as IV infusions, where a total of eight injections are given to the patient, one every three weeks. While some hearing loss symptoms may appear after only one infusion, these symptoms have a higher probability of occurrence after an average of 3-4 infusions. In addition to hearing loss and tinnitus, Tepezza infusion treatment has other otologic symptoms too.
